Ian Paterson compensation claims

In 2017, former breast surgeon Ian Paterson was reportedly jailed for 20 years after being found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent, with an additional three wounding charges. The criminal conviction demonstrates the severity of the case, which represents one of the most serious and wide-reaching cases of medical malpractice ever seen in the UK. However, the case against Paterson is far from over, with latest reports revealing that thousands of further victims may be able to engage in the Ian Paterson compensation claims processes.

A new patient recall issued by Spire Healthcare, a private provider by which Paterson was employed for a number of years, is understood to encompass some 5,500 former patients of Paterson. This may mean that thousands more victims might have suffered due to unnecessary procedures, including breast surgery and harmful ‘cleavage-sparing’ mastectomies. Additional victims could now be eligible to recover damages also.

As specialists in medical negligence and group actions, our legal representation has been available to victims since the scandal first came about. We urge any further victims who have been notified by the hospitals who employed Ian Paterson to come forward and claim the compensation they may be owed. Although nothing can reverse the harm caused to you, it is vital that those responsible are held to account for the harm caused.

The Ian Paterson scandal

Ian Paterson formerly worked as private practitioner with Spire Healthcare in the West Midlands as well as in having worked in the NHS. Perhaps the most concerning aspect of the malpractice scandal is the length of Paterson’s service as a breast surgeon, with concerns about his practices beginning years before he was publicly exposed.

In fact, as early as 2003, Ian Paterson was reportedly investigated over suspicions of ‘cleavage-sparing’ mastectomies, a form of surgery where breast tissue is left behind which could put patients at risk of their cancer returning. However, the investigations did not convert to action, and it was not until 2011 that Paterson was suspended from all the hospitals he worked at and a recall of his patients began.

Ian Paterson compensation claims for the victims

A recent update involving Spire Healthcare has expanded the number of patients who may be potentially eligible for Ian Paterson compensation claims. Now, as many as 5,500 victims have reportedly been contacted due to fears that they may have also been wounded by the disgraced surgeon, perhaps due to botched or unnecessary surgery.

As such, some patients have only just discovered that they were potentially harmed by Paterson, a fact that must have been distressing to learn. They should, however, still have time to engage in the Ian Paterson compensation claims processes, via which they could recover damages for any pain, injury, suffering or losses and expenses arising from any negligent treatment they suffered.
