Cybersecurity month 2021 – a time to take stock

As it is every year, Cybersecurity month 2021 is the time to take stock in terms of where we are when it comes to data protection and ensuring that our private and personal information is protected.

Victims of a data breach, including a cyberattack, can be eligible to claim compensation by law. Most people claim for the distress caused by the loss of control of their personal information. With so many big breaches and large hacks taking place in recent times, it is easy to see how we now represent thousands across over 50 data actions that we have launched.

Cybersecurity month 2021 reminds us all that our work continues to be incredibly important.

The importance of Cybersecurity month 2021

As it is every year, Cybersecurity month 2021 is an important event as we take stock and look back at what has happened, and what needs to be done to prevent breaches of the law. Although most people are a lot more knowledgeable now about data laws, there is still a great deal more that needs to be done. Even since the GDPR came into effect in summer 2018, we are still seeing huge volumes of cyberattacks leading to swathes of personal data being exposed. The coronavirus pandemic has not helped, as the shift to remote working made a lot of people vulnerable to problems, and already overburdened healthcare services have been prime targets for hackers.

All organisations must do all they can to make sure that they protect the personal information that they store and process. There can be no room for error or failure, which often leads to people suffering when personal data is misused or exposed.

This must be a time when organisations look even more closely at what more they can do and what they must do to make sure that they are compliant with the law.

Our work in group action data breach compensation

A lot of the group action work that we do is in the area of data breach law. This is because a lot of people tend to fall victim to large scale breaches, and these events keep happening. Despite so many breaches taking place, new ones keep occurring and lessons never seem to be learned. Some companies have been hacked more than once, which is even more alarming.

That is why we are not surprised to see that things have still not changed too much as we hit the next milestone of Cybersecurity month 2021. Too many organisations are still not doing enough to protect personal data, and too many are still falling prey to hacks. Our work in holding organisations to account with compensation claims is important.
