Knee replacement bearing recall

A knee replacement bearing recall has been initiated by Biomet UK Limited after the discovery that there’s a risk of some of their bearings being placed in the wrong packaging.

According to the available Field Safety Notice published by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency), left-handed bearings may have been placed in packaging for right-handed bearings. The discovery was reportedly made after a complaint had been received, and the recall that has been put in place affects products distributed this year.

Recalls involving medical devices and medical implants can be quite common. In some cases, the risk of any actual harm to patients is relatively low. However, in some instances, the problems that people can suffer with can be severe.

About the knee replacement bearing recall

The knee replacement bearing recall initiated by Zimmer Biomet reportedly affects products that were deployed roughly between February and May 2019.

The product specifically affected is the Oxford Anatomic Meniscal Bearing ArCom -Size 4, Medium.

Additional information available on the Field Safety Notice also confirms as follows:

  • Item Number: 159576;
  • Lot Number: 6461000;
  • UDI Number: 0 5019279 79622 0 240115 6461000.

What are the risks?

The risks for patients in relation to this knee replacement bearing recall are reportedly low.

Although the wrong bearing may have been placed in the incorrect packaging, the engraving on the bearing is understood to be correct. As such, medical professionals would likely identify the issue before surgical implantation. Even where they don’t, it should also be noticed if an attempt was made for implantation as well.

There could be a delay to the overall length of a surgical procedure if the wrong bearing is identified before placement, but more severe risks should be avoided.

About medical implant compensation claims

Medical implant compensation claims are some of the most common types that our Group Action Lawyers deal with.

From the PIP Breast Implant Scandal that we’ve recovered over £1.3m in damages so far for, to the Metal-On-Metal hip implant cases, the damage to patients can be horrendous.

The vaginal mesh compensation claims are a real current topic at the moment, and we continue tor regularly take new cases forward for women affected in England and Wales. In those cases, lives have literally been turned upside down, and some people have been left with lifelong problems.

There are also the hernia mesh compensation claims we’re fighting for justice in as well.

Individual claims can easily run into the tens of hundreds of thousands of pounds mark when people are left with serious and permanent complications.
