NHS breast cancer screening set for major overhaul
It’s understood that NHS breast cancer screening practices could be set for a huge overhaul after the IT glitch that was discovered last year.
Around 450,000 women in the UK were affected by the issue and did not receive their potentially life-saving invitation for screening. It’s understood that 150,000 of those women have since reportedly passed away, and hundreds may have had their lives shortened as a result of the glitch.
There are now talks of what look to be wholesale overhauls of the way IT systems are managed when it comes to things like screening. A new IT system for screening may also be in the works in the long-term as well.
The importance of an overhaul
The importance of an overhaul into NHS breast cancer screening practices cannot be understated, which is why the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is looking into it.
One simple coding error led to hundreds of thousands of women not receiving their invitation for screening that’s directly designed to save people’s lives. This cannot be allowed to happen again, and there are far better systems that could be used to avoid a repeat of this situation.
A recent report from the National Audit Office (NAO) reportedly concluded that many screening systems relied on old IT systems that were complex. Last year’s tragic news was a serious wake-up call that needs to be acted on before more lives are potentially lost due to glitches or coding errors with IT systems.
