Should there be better hernia mesh regulations?

As we take on more and more compensation claims for patients who have suffered complications, should there be better hernia mesh regulations?

We’re now acting for a number of people who have come forward and asked for our help, and they all have something in common. They have undergone hernia repair surgery that has involved the use of mesh, and it hasn’t been effective.

Although vaginal mesh has been in the news for years, hernia mesh and the complications that can arise is a more recent thing. Will we see a pause on the use of the procedure so this perhaps controversial form of surgery can be looked at in greater detail? Will there be changes to the way patients are selected for this kind of surgery? Will we see better regulations?

Calls for better hernia mesh regulations

There are calls for better hernia mesh regulations, particularly after the revelation that the risk of complications can be as high as 30%. Some of the complications can be severe, and may mean that patients need further surgery, or can be left with long-term problems.

The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) still backs the use of the procedure, but there are calls from some to look at better regulations. The calls are shared across the world, and we agree that this is an issue that needs to be looked at.

There’s definitely something to be looked at here.

What can happen when hernia mesh surgery goes wrong?

A lot can happen when the procedure goes wrong, which is why the calls for a review of hernia mesh regulations are being voiced.

Problems and complications that arise can include:

  • Pain, and in some cases chronic pain;
  • Mobility problems;
  • Hernia relapsing;
  • Adhesions from scar tissue;
  • Organ damage.

You can read more about hernia mesh problems on our full advice page here.

What can you do if you’ve suffered?

Before any reviews of the current hernia mesh regulations take place, what can you do if you suffer from any problems or complications arising from the surgery?

You may be eligible to make a claim for personal injury compensation along with the other patients we’re already representing for cases. We may be able to offer you No Win, No Fee representation as well.
