Calls for better hernia mesh regulations

There are calls for better hernia mesh regulations, particularly after the revelation that the risk of complications can be as high as 30%. Some of the complications can be severe, and may mean that patients need further surgery, or can be left with long-term problems.

The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) still backs the use of the procedure, but there are calls from some to look at better regulations. The calls are shared across the world, and we agree that this is an issue that needs to be looked at.

What can happen when hernia mesh surgery goes wrong?

A lot can happen when the procedure goes wrong, which is why the calls for a review of hernia mesh regulations are being voiced.

Problems and complications that arise can include:

• Pain, and in some cases chronic pain;
• Mobility problems;
• Hernia relapsing;
• Adhesions from scar tissue;
• Organ damage.
