Warnings against dangerous and unapproved silicone injections

Cosmetic surgery is extremely popular, with procedures being much more common and far more accessible these days. Clinicians have been keen to take on the enlarged demand, but not all are appropriately qualified, and not all are apparently using approved materials.

There are many horror stories about people trying to ‘improve’ their breasts, faces, biceps and buttocks by having all sorts of materials injected into them. In recent years, we’ve a seen a trend in silicone injections being obtained from the black market and / or being used by questionable clinicians.

The consequences can be horrifying…

Silicone injections have been used since the mid-20th Century, and even those first silicone injections sometimes developed into granules and hardened inside the body. Silicone breast implants are different to injections as the material is contained and shouldn’t be mixed into the blood stream. However, not all of these are safe; as seen in the PIP implant scandal, they can rupture inside the body.

We have recovered over £1.2m in damages for PIP victims since the scandal broke out.

Experts have warned against using Silicone injections as it can cause serious damage. One regularity statement said:

“Silicone spreads and migrates easily inside the body, which may worsen adverse events and make surgical attempts to remove the silicone oil more difficult or impossible.”

It added that, when injected in places that have a lot of blood vessels, like the buttocks, the silicone can, “travel to other parts of the body and block blood vessels in the lungs, heart or brain. This can result in a permanent damage to those tissues and lead to stroke of death.”

A lot of silicone injections may not be properly approved, yet it’s commonly used in the cosmetic surgery industry. There are stern warnings from experts that some clinicians may be telling customers that the injectable silicone is legal, or some may pretend that it’s something else; usually Sculptra or Restylane (used as a wrinkle filler).

Almost anyone who has suffered from a silicone injection procedure that has gone wrong will surely tell you to do your research and invest in proper and approved procedures and clinics. The mental and physical scarring of using cheaper and potentially “dodgy” alternatives are simply not worth it.

Surgery to remove silicone that has travelled around the body can be difficult and it’s often hard to get rid of it all. There are risks and serious complications, and patients may suffer from lifelong pain, scarring, disfigurement, infections and may require treatment for life.
