The wider importance of our emissions actions

Our emissions actions now number at over 30 in terms of the number of carmakers that we are taking legal cases forward for, representing thousands of people on a No Win, No Fee basis.

Whilst action for justice for the consumers is important and is an integral part of what we are doing, it is also incredibly important to recognise the wider importance of the action that we are taking. It is about punishments and deterrents and, given the impact that cheating emissions can have on human health and on our environment, our work is vital.

The wider importance of our emissions actions

The wider importance of our emissions actions is vital to acknowledge given that the science is clear about illnesses and fatalities that can be caused by toxic emissions, and how they can be entirely preventable. The world is a lot more awake to how our climate and how our health is being impacted by the actions that we take, and last November’s Cop26 was at least some effort to try to address and correct the issues.

It is no secret that the quality of our air is a worldwide problem, and the climate emergency and the crisis surrounding it are real. There is also social injustice in respect of how people in lower income areas can be subjected to higher volumes of pollutants, which is something that must be a real focus for governments around the world.

Some recent figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO) suggested that a staggering 100% of Londoners are in areas that are above the recommended limits. This shows just how much more we need to do to get things right and sort these problems out.

Action for consumers and punishments for offenders

Whilst the focus of this article is about the wider importance of our emissions actions, we must also make sure to address how we are helping consumers, and how our compensation cases can act as further punishment and as a deterrent.

If allegations of cheating are proven against any of the carmakers that we are pursuing action against, we may find ourselves in a situation where consumers have been misled. If consumers have been misled, this may have cost them money, and it is only right that they should be compensated.

Further, we must not allow emissions cheating to go unpunished. Little has been done in the UK to really punish alleged offenders, save for the legal actions for compensation that we launch. We must not let any carmaker get away with cheating, so any manufacturer that has been found to have used things like defeat devices must be punished.

Punishing huge and wealthy corporations is usually only effective by hitting them where it hurts: in the pocket. Financial damages can serve as a real punishment and can hopefully act as a deterrent against others engaging in such behaviour in the future.
