Thousands of recalls for drugs manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical plants in India and Hungary

Regulators have recently raised concerns surrounding Sun Pharmaceutical’s plants in India and Hungary.

12,000 bottles of beta blocker have been recalled voluntarily by the company when some of the products failed impurities and degradation testing. The mass recall may give rise to legal proceedings if any customer who has bought a potentially defect product from them has had any issues.

The plant, located in Hungary, is one of Sun Pharmaceutical’s primary sites for providing goods to the rest of the world. Although there are not yet any confirmed adverse health effects, we can never be too cautious. There is a good reason as to why products are specifically tested and regulated for human consumption: when things go wrong, people’s health – or even their lives – can be at risk.

If there is a cause for concern for human health…

As the irregularities are to do with human health, the nature of any concerns need to be addressed quickly, and taken very seriously. Those who are affected by the bottles of beta blocker, or the tablets manufactured in Hungary or India, may have a claim against the company for personal injury if there is a problem.

The seriousness is reiterated in Mutual Pharmaceutical’s (a subdivision of Sun Pharmaceutical) recall of 187,106 bottles of felodipine extended-release blood pressure tablets. In 2013, the company faced a lawsuit in the U.S., although the Supreme Court reversed a $21 million verdict against them when a woman alleged that the drug made her go blind after she started using the drugs produced by the company. However, it was a very close call with a slight majority of 5-4 in the judgement.

The major drug company should be cautious as the authorities will continue to be watchful – especially when the protection of health and lives of individuals are in their hands. There should be extreme testing prior to the public release of the drugs to ensure that recalls and potential lawsuits are limited.
