Vaginal mesh scandal: new warning from expert over plastic material

The vaginal mesh scandal has hit the news again this week as we continue to represent victims claiming compensation for pelvic mesh procedures that have gone wrong.

The invasive surgical procedure was under a widespread pause last year following further reviews into the safety and efficacy of the devices. In April this year, revised guidelines were released by NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), which many have argued do not go far enough.

We know from years of experience and from the clients that we help that the impact of mesh gone wrong can be absolutely awful.

Expert criticises materials at centre of vaginal mesh scandal

It’s reported that an expert has argued that the plastic material at the centre of the ongoing worldwide vaginal mesh scandal is simply not safe.

Dr Chris DeArmitt, a chartered chemist, has been called on as part of ongoing court action in America. He has said that the testing on the plastic used in mesh is “way less than you would see on a vacuum cleaner or a washing machine”.

His testimonies have reportedly led to some 9,000 women settle legal actions out of court in the U.S. It’s believed that the material is simply rejected by the body, and that the material used shouldn’t be allowed inside the body at all.

Does this help the UK lawsuits?

The vaginal mesh scandal is a worldwide issue that affects people in the UK as well as those in America where the expert evidence has been used for settling cases.

These are separate jurisdictions, but the fact that an expert has made such a clear testimony may help the battle for legal justice this side of the pond as well.

Our lawyers are representing a number of women who are claiming for personal injury compensation having suffered a range of serious complications from their pelvic mesh surgery. We will always use any evidence that can be made available that’s supportive of the wider fight for justice.
