Big news! Xarelto compensation settlements are taking place, with almost £600m in damages set to be paid out by Bayer AG and Johnson & Johnson.
The settlements are for around 25,000 lawsuits in the U.S., where Bayer and J&J have reportedly agreed to settle the litigation for $775m. The Group Action Lawyers continue to fight for justice for UK victims who are suffering side-effects of taking the drug, that’s also known as Rivaroxaban. You can read more about the UK action here.
While the companies maintain that the claims are without merit, and the settlement is made without an admission of liability, this is a huge result. The two companies are set to be sharing the burden of the cost as they jointly-developed the drug.
The Xarelto compensation settlements news is huge. The blood-thinning, anti-stroke drug, also known as Rivaroxaban, has been at the centre of a long-running dispute about its safety and efficacy.
Those who have come forward with problems say that they have suffered uncontrollable bleeding, with some left with serious injuries, and some fatalities reported as well. The companies are being accused of failing to properly warn about these side-effects, which has led to an alleged lack of warning from doctors prescribing the medication. They deny the allegations.
In the past, Bayer has been accused of allegedly covering-up knowledge about the potentially dangerous side-effects. It’s alleged that critical information had been withheld from medical authorities before the drug’s approval. The alleged cover-ups have been strenuously denied as well.
The Xarelto compensation settlements are for U.S. cases. It has to be noted that the two have different jurisdictions and standards, and the companies are maintaining their denial of liability.
That being said, we see the news as a positive step forward in the wider fight for justice. We’re also connected, and work with, American lawyers as well as lawyers in Europe. Just last week, members of the firm attended a conference in the U.S. where Xarelto was discussed.
